🔵⚽️ NINE MEN, ONE HELL OF A FIGHT!
THE CHALLENGE – Our first away fixture of the season took us to Chipstead Youth — an established side that has competed at this level for several seasons.
We knew it was going to be another tough test. The pitch certainly didn’t help. A grass surface with a noticeable slope and in extremely poor condition made playing our football difficult, and the lads were going to have to adapt.
Then, just before kick-off, another challenge came our way. Our squad of 10 became 9 during the warm-up after one of the lads picked up a continued injury that was simply too painful to play through. There was never going to be any risk taken with a player’s safety. From a safeguarding perspective, but also simply because we care about these lads, the decision was made to protect the player.
So, nine Blues went into battle.
FIRST HALF – THE PHYSICAL BATTLE
The first half was difficult. We didn’t get to grips with the physical side of the game quickly enough and allowed Chipstead too much respect.
But despite that, we created chance after chance.
The bar.
The post.
A superb opposition goalkeeper.
Everything seemed to be going against us in front of goal.
Then Chipstead found the breakthrough. We failed to pick up our marker from a throw-in, the ball was worked across the box and they found the finish. 1–0 Chipstead.
The lads continued to battle, but there was a feeling that it simply wasn’t going to be our day. Yet we were still creating opportunities. We just couldn’t find the goal.
HALF-TIME: CHIPSTEAD 1–0 BLUES
🔥 SECOND HALF – THE BLUES FIGHT BACK
We changed a few positions at half-time and asked the lads to be braver.
Get closer.
Be stronger.
Attack the ball.
And, most importantly, keep believing.
Slowly, the game began to change. We started seeing more of the ball and pushing Chipstead backwards. Then finally…
⚽ THE EQUALISER!
A long ball dropped into the path of Knighty, who got there ahead of the advancing goalkeeper and showed brilliant composure to chip the keeper. The ball hit the back of the net. 1–1! Game on.
🔵 THE BLUES GO IN FRONT!
The momentum had shifted. We were now getting on top and starting to play some really good football. And the second goal was a lovely piece of Blues football.
Louis moved the ball forward brilliantly. He found Vinnie, who drove into the box before laying a lovely ball across to Jack. Jack didn’t hesitate. BOOM! Straight into the bottom-left corner. 2–1 BLUES! 🔵
From a goal down to taking the lead. With nine players. Away from home. Against an established team. What a response from the lads.
😰 THE FINAL 10 MINUTES
With around 10 minutes remaining, it felt like the next goal could decide everything.
Both teams had spells of possession, but our lads were understandably beginning to tire. They had given absolutely everything. We worked hard to keep possession, defend as a team and try to see the game out.
Then, incredibly late in the game, Chipstead won a corner. The delivery was good. The header was powerful. And suddenly… 2–2. Heartbreak.
But there was still one more moment. With just seconds remaining, Chipstead had an opportunity to win it. Ben wasn’t having it. A brilliant one-handed save kept the game level and secured a point for the Blues.
FULL-TIME: CHIPSTEAD 2–2 BLUES
Was it the result we wanted? Probably not. But the effort from the lads deserved huge credit.
Nine players.
A difficult pitch.
A physical opponent.
A goal behind.
And yet we fought our way back into the game and took the lead.
That tells us plenty about the character within this group.
🧠 THE LEARNING
There are things we need to improve. We have to attack the ball better. We need to be first to the ball and first to the second ball.
And we need to understand that at this level, we cannot allow ourselves to be pushed and pulled around physically. The last two games have been physical battles. Maybe that’s simply the standard at this level. If it is, then we need to adapt quickly.
We need to become comfortable in those battles and make sure we are competing from the very first whistle.
Today, though, the lads showed they are capable of it. We came from behind. We took the lead. We defended together. We fought until the very end. And, most importantly, we never gave up.
With hopefully some reinforcements returning to the squad soon, we can keep building and moving forward.
I’m genuinely proud of the effort today, Blues. 👏
⭐ SPECIAL MENTION – LOUIS
A special mention has to go to Louis. He stepped in at left-back and put in a really good performance. He created the attacking opportunity that led to our second goal, but more importantly, he showed strength, determination and physicality throughout the game. That’s exactly what we needed today.

🏆 PLAYER OF THE MATCH – BOBSY
From the first whistle to the last, he worked tirelessly in the middle of our defence. His energy, work rate and determination were outstanding. He constantly battled to stop and break down Chipstead’s attacks and never stopped working for the team. A really solid performance when we needed it most.
